By Momineen Quran Center – Online Shia Quran Classes for All Ages

🕋 Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

As the sacred days of Muharram unfold, the 8th of Muharram reminds us of profound moments of bravery, loyalty, and final warnings. At Momineen Quran Center, where we teach the Qur’an under the light of the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), these historical lessons are brought to life for students of all ages through our expert male and female Shia teachers.

Today, let us reflect upon four powerful events that occurred on the 8th of Muharram in Karbala, as narrated by Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi.

1. ʿAmr ibn Qarẓah – Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s Emissary of Guidance

ʿAmr ibn Qarẓah al-Anṣārī, a son of a loyal companion of the Prophet (s) and Imam Ali (a.s.), was one of the faithful who joined Imam Husayn (a.s.) in Karbala. Imam Husayn (a.s.) appointed him to speak with Umar ibn Saʿd and attempt to guide him back to truth and righteousness. His mission was one of sincere da’wah, showing Imam’s commitment to guiding even his enemies before the battle began.

2. Nāfeʿ ibn Hilāl & Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.) Break Through for Water

On the 8th of Muharram, as thirst began to take a toll on the camp of Husayn (a.s.), he instructed his brother Abul Fadl Abbas (a.s.) to attempt fetching water from the Euphrates. Accompanied by brave souls, including Nāfeʿ ibn Hilāl, the group courageously broke through enemy lines. Nāfeʿ, a seasoned warrior and devout follower of Imam Ali (a.s.), led the mission with valor.

He carried a special banner and later, on Ashura, fought bravely until he was captured with both arms broken. Refusing to surrender his loyalty, he was martyred by Shimr. His battle cries echo today in the hearts of believers:

“I am the Yemeni man from the clan of Bajal. My religion is the religion of Husayn ibn Ali.”

“I am a lion from the clan of Jamali. I follow the creed of Ali.”

3. Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s Final Warning to Umar ibn Saʿd

On this night, Imam Husayn (a.s.) met Umar ibn Saʿd in a private meeting. Despite knowing Imam’s divine status, Umar refused to abandon his position, fearing for his worldly possessions and family. Imam offered him peace, protection, and even material compensation—but his love for power outweighed truth.

Imam Husayn (a.s.), seeing Umar’s stubbornness, gave a final warning:

“Woe to you, O Ibn Saʿd! Do you not fear Allah to Whom is your return?! … Leave these people and join us. This is closer to Allah.”

And when Umar refused, Imam declared:

“May Allah slaughter you on your bed soon, and may He never forgive you on the Day of Resurrection…”

Sadly, Umar replied arrogantly:

“The barley of Iraq will suffice me in place of wheat.”

This tragic exchange reminds us of how attachment to the world can blind even the most informed hearts. At Momineen Quran Center, we teach our students the deeper Qur’anic values behind such historical dialogues—values of tawakkul, sacrifice, and akhlaq.

4. Harthamah ibn Salīm Remembers Imam Ali’s Prophecy

Another witness to the sanctity of Karbala was Harthamah ibn Salīm. Years before Ashura, he had stood on the soil of Karbala alongside Imam Ali (a.s.), who picked up its dust and said:

“O sacred land! From you, people will be resurrected who shall enter Paradise without any reckoning.”

Later, Harthamah found himself in Ibn Ziyad’s army, sent to fight Imam Husayn (a.s.). But he remembered Imam Ali’s words and confessed them to Imam Husayn (a.s.) himself. Fearing for his family’s safety, he chose not to fight nor support the Imam. Imam Husayn (a.s.) told him:

“Then go far away and do not witness our martyrdom. For whoever sees us being killed and does not come to our aid will enter the Fire.”

This profound moment captures the spiritual gravity of “choosing a side” in times of truth vs falsehood. Neutrality is not an option when Haqq is under attack.
