Bismi-Llāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm
The 7th of Muharram marks a deeply sorrowful turning point in the journey of Imam Husayn (a.s.). On this day, the water supply to the camp of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions was completely cut off. From that moment on, the desert of Karbala echoed with one agonizing cry:
“Al-Atash! Al-Atash!” – “Thirst! Thirst!”
Even the children of the household of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.), known for their unmatched patience, could no longer bear the suffering of thirst. This act of cruelty exposed the heartless tyranny of Yazid’s army, who denied even the basic right of water to the family of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.).
🏴 Hazrat Qasim Ibn al-Hasan (a.s.) – The Young Warrior
The 7th of Muharram is also a day when we remember the valiant youth of Karbala, Hazrat Qasim ibn al-Hasan (a.s.), the beloved son of Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Bibi Umm Farwa. Only 13 years old, Qasim (a.s.) stood bravely in the battlefield, sacrificing his life for the message of Islam and the protection of his uncle, Imam Husayn (a.s.).
While it is common in some cultures to refer to this day as “Qasim’s Mehndi”, this notion has no historical or religious foundation in authentic Islamic history.
❌ Debunking the Myth of “Mehndi in Karbala”
The idea of a “mehndi” or wedding ceremony for Hazrat Qasim (a.s.) on the 7th of Muharram is a cultural misconception that has gained popularity in regions like Pakistan and India. Mehndi, a pre-wedding celebration involving henna, is a South Asian tradition, not an Arab or Islamic practice.
Some even claim that Hazrat Qasim (a.s.) was married to Fatimah al-Kubra (a.s.), daughter of Imam Husayn (a.s.), to show that the Imam had no intention of fighting. They describe tents prepared, henna mixed with tears, and a nikah sermon by Hazrat Abbas (a.s.).
But in reality:
-
Fatimah al-Kubra (a.s.) was married to Hazrat Hasan al-Muthanna (a.s.),
-
No wedding or celebratory ritual occurred in Karbala,
-
The battlefield of Karbala was never a place for joy or marriage, but one of sacrifice, sorrow, and divine purpose.
🕯️ Karbala is a Legacy of Sacrifice, Not Celebration
Misunderstanding events like the 7th of Muharram dilutes the true message of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and the Ahlebayt (a.s.). Karbala is not about ceremonies or cultural customs—it is about standing firm against injustice, oppression, and falsehood.
