2nd Night of Muharram – A Journey Toward Sacrifice
Surah al-Fatiha
Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Tonight marks the second night of Muharram, a night that deepens our sorrow and reflection. On this day, Imam Husayn (a.s) and his caravan—composed of family members and loyal companions—arrived at the land of Karbala. This land, destined for martyrdom, would soon witness a defining stand against tyranny.
🏴 Arrival in Karbala – The Land of Sacrifice
On the 2nd of Muharram 61 AH, the caravan of truth reached Karbala. Awaiting them were thousands of soldiers from Yazid’s army, sent to confront the Imam and pressure him into allegiance.
A local tribe resided in Karbala, and Imam Husayn (a.s) approached them with grace and foresight. He inquired about the land and purchased it—knowing it would become the final resting place of himself, his family, and his companions.
💔 The Imam’s Heartfelt Requests
As the Imam looked upon the people of the tribe, he made a series of deeply emotional appeals:
To the men:
“We have not come to fight. Yazid’s army will kill us and leave our bodies unburied. I ask only one thing—please bury our bodies.”
To the women:
“If your men are afraid, then you, O noble women, come and bury our bodies when they are in the fields.”
To the children:
“If even the women cannot do it, then when you play in the fields, throw a handful of sand upon our bodies. Little by little, we will be covered.”
These words reflect not only Imam Husayn’s humility and foresight, but also the depth of his patience in the face of certain martyrdom.
🕌 The Imam’s Second Request
The Imam then made another moving request to the tribe:
“When pilgrims come to visit our graves, welcome them. Feed them. Honor them. They are my guests. Offer them food and shelter for at least three days.”
Even in the face of death, his concern was for the future mourners, for the preservation of truth, and for those who would carry his message.
⛺ Tents by the River – Abbas (a.s) Steps Forward
In the burning heat of Karbala, access to water was critical. Imam Husayn (a.s) instructed Hazrat Abbas (a.s) to pitch tents near the Euphrates River. But Yazid’s forces responded with hostility, blocking access and tearing down the tents.
Abbas, son of Imam Ali (a.s), drew his sword, ready to defend the right to water. The enemy feared him. They knew his strength and loyalty.
But Imam Husayn (a.s) stopped him:
“Abbas, my brother, put away your sword. We did not come here to fight for water. Let no one say that we began the battle. Move the tents elsewhere.”
Abbas obeyed. Such was the discipline, loyalty, and moral stance of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s).
⚔️ Yazid’s Army Grows
With each passing day, Yazid’s army increased—from hundreds to over 20,000 soldiers, surrounding Imam Husayn’s small group of just 72.
Why so many for so few?
Because Yazid feared not numbers—but the power of faith, courage, and truth.
🚫 Water Blockade & the Cry of “Al-Atash!”
On the 7th of Muharram, Yazid’s forces cut off access to the river completely. From that moment, thirst became a test for the family of the Prophet (s.a.w).
The scorching desert echoed with the cries of:
“Al-Atash! Al-Atash! Water! Water! Thirst! Thirst!”
The children suffered. Women collapsed from exhaustion. Among them was Bibi Sakina (s.a), whose soft sobs tore at the heart of Abbas (a.s). But still, he waited—for his Imam’s permission.
The cry of thirst in Karbala is not just history—it is a wound in the heart of every lover of Ahlul Bayt.
📿 Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’oon
“Surely we belong to Allah, and to Him is our return.”
May our hearts never forget the sacrifice of Imam Husayn (a.s), the tears of Bibi Sakina (s.a), the patience of Abbas (a.s), and the pain of the thirsty children in Karbala.
💔 Matam Al-Husayn (a.s)
Ya Husayn! Ya Abbas! Ya Sakina!
O Allah, let our tears for Karbala cleanse our hearts.
Let our remembrance of Karbala bring us closer to truth, patience, and sacrifice.
