٢٠ صفر الأربعين ٢٠٢٥: تكريم حضرة الإمام الحسين (عليه السلام)

The 20th day of Safar marks a deeply significant occasion for millions of Muslims worldwide, particularly within the Shia community—Chehlum, or Arbaeen (الأربعين). This day is a powerful commemoration rooted in the rich tapestry of Islamic history, honoring the unparalleled sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) (حضرة الإمام الحسين عليه السلام), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) (النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وآله)، and his steadfast companions who faced martyrdom on the plains of Karbala in 61 AH (680 CE). The tradition of Arbaeen, the “fortieth,” refers to the completion of forty days of mourning, a period that holds unique spiritual resonance and finds its basis in the Quran, Sunnah, and the heritage of Ahlul Bayt (عليهم السلام).

The 20th of Safar is not only an occasion for the remembrance and mourning of tragedy but also a time for reflection, spiritual introspection, and reaffirmation of timeless Islamic values. This blog, presented by Momineen Quran Center, explores the profound significance of Chehlum, supported by trusted Shia sources, reference to relevant Quranic verses, and real-world lessons for the global Ummah.

The Historical Significance of Chehlum in Shia Islam

الأهمية التاريخية للأربعين في الإسلام الشيعي

Imam Hussain (AS) emerged as an everlasting emblem of truth (الحق), justice (العدل), and unwavering devotion (الإيمان الثابت) to the cause of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), bravely confronting the tyranny and injustice of Yazid’s rule. His martyrdom in Karbala is not merely a historical event, but a paradigmatic stand for justice, sacrifice, and moral fortitude.

The Pioneering Role of Jaber bin Abdullah Al-Ansari

One of the most significant and revered figures in the commemoration of Chehlum is Jaber bin Abdullah Al-Ansari (جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري), a distinguished companion of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). According to authoritative Shia sources such as Kamil al-Ziyarat (كامل الزيارات) by Ibn Qulawayh and Bihar al-Anwar (بحار الأنوار), Jaber was the first person known to visit the blessed grave of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala on the day of Arbaeen, 20th Safar.

Jaber made this historic pilgrimage in the year 61 AH, traveling from Medina to Karbala despite old age and impaired vision, guided by his loyal companion Atiya ibn Sa’d al-Awfi. Upon reaching the banks of the Euphrates, Jaber performed ritual ablution, dressed in pure garments, and proceeded with deep reverence and sorrow toward the grave of Imam Hussain (AS). With tears filling his eyes, he recited salutations and prayers, demonstrating the utmost love and loyalty to the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH).

As narrated:

>

“Jaber bin Abdullah al-Ansari arrived at the grave of Imam Hussain (AS), performed ghusl, donned clean clothes, advanced deliberately until he stopped at the sacred grave, uttered takbeer three times, and fell unconscious out of grief and love.”
(Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 268; Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 98, p. 329)

Jaber’s visit marked the inception of the Ziyarat tradition and established the spiritual foundation for all subsequent pilgrimages to Karbala. His actions underscore the importance of remembering and honoring the martyrs. Later, on the same day, the surviving members of Ahlul Bayt (عليهم السلام), led by Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (AS) and Lady Zainab (سلام الله عليها), are reported to have arrived in Karbala and joined Jaber in mourning and prayer. This event signaled the transformation of Arbaeen into a time of communal reflection, reverence, and allegiance to the truth upheld by Imam Hussain (AS).

In Shia tradition, Jaber bin Abdullah Al-Ansari is remembered as a symbol of unwavering love and dedication to the Prophet’s family. His first Ziyarat on Arbaeen is commemorated every year and serves as the origin of the millions-strong Arbaeen pilgrimage today.

The Martyrdom in Karbala: A Defining Moment

On the 10th of Muharram (Ashura), Imam Hussain (AS), his family, and companions faced unthinkable hardship—enduring thirst, hunger, and the threat of annihilation for upholding the sanctity of Islam. The days that followed left the survivors, mostly women and children—led by Sayyida Zainab (سلام الله عليها) and Imam Zain-ul-Abideen (عليه السلام)—in captivity, enduring trials in the court of Yazid, only strengthening the cause Imam Hussain (AS) championed.

Chehlum, forty days after Ashura, became the formal marker for the community to gather, mourn, and renew their pledge to stand for these ideals. Historical accounts in authoritative Shia texts—such as Bihar al-Anwar (بحار الأنوار), especially Volume 82, and Kamil al-Ziyarat (كامل الزيارات) by Ibn Qulawayh—explain how Jaber ibn Abdullah Al-Ansari (جابر بن عبد الله الأنصاري), a revered companion of the Prophet (PBUH), was among the first pilgrims to visit the blessed grave of Imam Hussain (AS) on Arbaeen. According to these sources, he was later joined by the returning caravan of Ahlul Bayt, transforming Chehlum into an occasion of both profound grief and enduring spiritual hope.

Importance of Forty Days in Islamic Tradition

The significance of the number forty in Islamic tradition is widely attested:

  • Prophet Musa (Moses) (عليه السلام) spent forty nights at Mount Sinai (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:51, Surah Al-A’raf 7:142).
  • The age of prophethood for many messengers, including the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), is recognized at forty.
  • Classical narrations emphasize that the effects of mourning and remembrance reach their spiritual culmination at forty days.

قال رسول الله (صلى الله عليه وآله): “الأربعين من علامات المؤمن: زيارة الحسين (عليه السلام) في الأربعين.”
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Among the signs of a believer are: the visitation (Ziyarat) of Imam Hussain (AS) on Arbaeen.”
(Wasā’il al-Shī‘a, vol. 10, p. 393)

The first Chehlum became a pivotal ritual, evolving over centuries into a global event that keeps the message of Karbala vibrant and ever-relevant.

Quranic Insights on Martyrdom and Remembrance

رؤى قرآنية حول الشهادة والذكرى

The Quran places immense value on the sacrifice of martyrs (الشهداء) and the act of remembering their example. This spiritual remembrance is both an honoring of the martyrs themselves and a source of inspiration for the living.

Quranic Verses on Martyrdom

  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:154)
    • > “And do not say of those who are killed in the way of Allah, ‘They are dead.’ Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.”

This verse reinforces the idea that the martyrs of Karbala, with Imam Hussain (AS) at the forefront, possess a life far more profound than physical existence—their legacy, teachings, and inspiration live eternally.

  • Surah Al-Imran (3:169-171)
    • > “Think not of those who are slain in God’s way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of their Lord.”

These verses provide powerful solace and inspiration for all who visit the shrine of Imam Hussain (AS) or commemorate his Chehlum, affirming that martyrdom is rewarded with a spiritual life in Allah’s nearness.

Quranic Reminders of Reflection and Remembrance

  • Surah Maryam (19:58)
    • > “When the verses of the Most Compassionate were recited to them, they fell in prostration and wept.”
    • > إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا (مريم: 58)
  • Surah Al-Dhariyat (51:55)
    • > “And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.”
    • > وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ الذِّكْرَى تَنفَعُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ (الذاريات: 55)

Such verses inspire Muslims to engage in gatherings of remembrance (majalis) and evoke a spirit of humility, reflection, and resolve that is central to Chehlum traditions.

Why Arbaeen is a Global Phenomenon

لماذا الأربعين ظاهرة عالمية؟

In the modern era, Arbaeen stands as the world’s largest annual public gathering—a spiritual pilgrimage that has, in recent years, attracted more than 20 million people from all continents to the blessed land of Karbala. The Arbaeen walk (مسيرة الأربعين) is a vivid demonstration of unity, spiritual longing, and collective resistance against all forms of injustice.

The Arbaeen Walk: Symbolism and Participation

The journey to Karbala often involves walking for days or even hundreds of kilometers. Pilgrims—young and old, men, women, and even children—travel from cities such as Najaf, Basra, or even further. Along the way, locals provide free water, food, medical care, and shelter—embodying the very ethos of service and sacrifice exemplified by Imam Hussain (AS).

“Millions march upon your shrine, O Hussain,
Their feet blistered but hearts alive with love,
Answering your call for truth and justice,
Through every hardship, they walk—
For You taught us that dignity is worth every trial.”

The sheer scale of this event, despite facing threats and challenges, speaks to the enduring power of Imam Hussain’s (AS) message.

Chehlum’s Impact on Communities Worldwide

Even for those who cannot travel to Karbala, Arbaeen is commemorated beyond Iraq, in countries including Iran, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, Bahrain, Africa, Europe, and North America. Processions, majalis, lectures, blood drives, and charity events are organized, often with Muslims and non-Muslims alike participating to honor the enduring message of Karbala.

قال الإمام الصادق (عليه السلام): “من زار الحسين عارفًا بحقه كتب الله له ثواب ألف حجة وألف عمرة.”
Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (AS) said: “Whoever visits Hussain (AS) knowing his right, Allah will write for him the reward of a thousand Hajj and a thousand Umrah.”
(Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 324)

Rituals and Practices Observed During 20 Safar

الطقوس والممارسات في العشرين من صفر

Across the globe, believers honor 20 Safar through a range of spiritual, educational, and charitable rituals, each rooted in Shia sources and traditions.

1. Majalis (Gatherings) | المجالس الحسينية

Majalis are held in mosques, husayniyyas, homes, schools, and even online. Learned scholars and orators recount the events of Karbala, explore the virtues of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions, and inspire the audience toward self-betterment and justice. Poetic recitations (marsiyas, nohas, lamentations) evoke the emotional depth of the tragedy and foster a sense of communal empathy.

  • Majalis often include children’s and women’s sessions, nurturing the values of Karbala from one generation to the next.
  • Storytelling and reflection on the roles of Sayyida Zainab (سلام الله عليها), Hazrat Abbas (عليه السلام), and other heroes of Karbala are central.
  • References for majalis content can be found in Luhuf by Ibn Tawus and Nafasul Mahmum by Sheikh Abbas Qummi.

2. Ziyarat Arbaeen | زيارة الأربعين

Recitation of Ziyarat Arbaeen, either in person at the shrine or at home, is strongly recommended for all believers:

“السلام على ولي الله وحبيبه، السلام على خليل الله ونجيبه، السلام على صفي الله وابن صفية…”
“Peace be upon the friend and beloved of Allah, peace be upon the intimate and chosen of Allah, peace be upon the pure one and son of the pure.”

This ziyarat, mentioned specifically in Mafatih al-Jinan (مفاتيح الجنان) and Tahdhib al-Ahkam, connects the reciter with the legacy of the Ahlul Bayt (عليهم السلام). Many also recite passages from Du’a Nudba, Du’a Tawassul, and reflect on the history and virtues recorded in authentic ahadith.

3. Charity and Acts of Kindness | الصدقة والأعمال الخيرية

The essence of Imam Hussain’s (AS) mission is manifest in acts of kindness, service, and helping those in need.

  • On 20 Safar, many distribute food and water, organize blood donation drives, and extend support to orphans and the poor.
  • Volunteer initiatives and public service, inspired by the legacy of Ahlul Bayt, are widely reported in Shia communities, echoing the Prophet’s hadith: “He who lessens the suffering of a believer, Allah will lessen his suffering in this life and the hereafter.” (Kanz al-Ummal)

4. Processions and Symbolic Walks | المواكب والمسيرات الرمزية

Where possible, processions and symbolic walks are organized to emulate the tradition of ziyarah and solidarity. Mourning processions (azadari), often accompanied by lamenting and poetry, are a hallmark of Shia religious practice.

5. Educational and Qur’an-Centric Events | الفعاليات التعليمية والقرآنية

Communities, especially educational centers like Momineen Quran Center, highlight Qur’anic themes of standing up for justice and honoring the righteous. Programs may include:

  • Qur’anic recitation competitions
  • Lectures on Quranic verses relevant to the story of Karbala
  • Online campaigns sharing daily lessons from the life and sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS)

Chehlum in Modern Times

الأربعين في العصر الحديث

With the growing influence of global communication, Chehlum’s resonance extends ever further, uniting people across continents. In recent years, Arbaeen commemorations have addressed contemporary challenges such as war, social injustice, poverty, and displacement—making the message of Karbala perpetually timely.

Modern Reflections on the Lessons of Karbala

  • Many human rights activists and historians recognize Karbala as a symbol for standing against tyranny and defending the oppressed everywhere, regardless of religious background.
  • Chehlum serves as a platform for interfaith dialogue and community service, where the values of compassion, sacrifice, and social justice are universalized.

“Every day is Ashura, every land is Karbala.”
“كل يوم عاشوراء، كل أرض كربلاء.”

This Shia proverb reminds us that the lessons of sacrifice, dignity, and struggle against oppression are relevant in our daily lives and every corner of the world.

Lessons from Imam Hussain’s (AS) Sacrifice

دروس من تضحية الإمام الحسين (عليه السلام)

The immortal legacy of Karbala carries lessons for all of humanity:

1. Upholding Truth and Justice | التمسك بالحق والعدل

Imam Hussain (AS) refused to pledge allegiance to falsehood, even when faced with certain death. His example teaches that standing for what is right must come before personal safety or material comfort.

“إن كان دين محمد لم يستقم إلا بقتلي، يا سيوف خذيني.”

>

“If the religion of Muhammad would not endure except by my killing, then O swords, take me!”

>

(Attributed to Imam Hussain (AS), Maqtal al-Hussain)

2. Faith in the Face of Adversity | الثبات في وجه المحن

Karbala teaches us that trials and adversity are part of the journey towards truth. Imam Hussain’s (AS) resilience is echoed by Zainab (سلام الله عليها) and the steadfastness of the Ahlul Bayt—even as captives.

3. Compassion, Charity, and Service | الرحمة والصدقة والخدمة

Giving charity, serving humanity, and extending kindness are central elements in following the teachings of Imam Hussain (AS).

4. Unity Through Collective Faith | الوحدة من خلال الإيمان الجماعي

Arbaeen unites Muslims and people of different backgrounds behind a common banner of justice, truth, and love for the Prophet’s family. The spirit of walking together toward Karbala is a metaphor for walking together toward a better, just society.

5. Remembrance as a Source of Power | الذكرى كمصدر للقوة

The ongoing remembrance of Karbala and Imam Hussain (AS) nurtures hope, strengthens identity, and renews the resolve to stand against all forms of injustice in today’s world.

Final Reflections

تأملات أخيرة

The Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) is more than a religious event; it’s a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual beacon for humanity. On 20 Safar, millions commemorate his sacrifice, experiencing a renewed sense of faith and determination to walk his path of truth and justice.

Throughout centuries, the story of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala has transcended time and place—uniting the hearts of believers who yearn for a world filled with dignity, freedom, and moral clarity. Today, Arbaeen stands as both a living heritage and a challenge to humanity: to follow the path of unwavering truth, to serve others selflessly, and to keep the flame of justice alive.

May Allah grant us all the ability to walk in the footsteps of Imam Hussain (AS), to embody truth, justice, and mercy, and to remember always that the sacrifices of Karbala guide us toward a better world.

اللهم ارزقنا في الدنيا زيارة الحسين (عليه السلام) وفي الآخرة شفاعته.

Dua Imam e Zamana holds a special place in the lives of Muslims, especially among those who yearn for a deeper connection with their faith and the awaited savior, Imam Mahdi (AS). This supplication is not merely a ritual prayer but a profound expression of devotion and longing that connects believers to the divine guidance of Imam Mahdi (AS). At Momineen Quran Center, we believe in fostering a deeper understanding of such meaningful practices to enrich spiritual journeys.

What is Dua Imam e Zamana?

At its core, Dua Imam e Zamana is a supplication that highlights the hope and faith in the coming of Imam Mahdi (AS), the divinely guided leader who will establish justice and peace. The prayer serves as a direct means of seeking blessings, aligning our hearts with the will of Allah, and expressing our readiness for the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (AS).

This dua is rich with themes of surrender, love, and trust in Allah’s plan. It is a way of spiritually preparing oneself for an era of justice that will emerge with Imam Mahdi’s (AS) leadership.

The Spiritual Benefits of Dua Imam e Zamana

Reciting this dua offers several spiritual benefits that can transform the lives of believers. These include fostering hope, strengthening faith, and bringing a sense of peace to those seeking divine support in their hardships. Let’s explore these benefits in more detail.

1. Connecting to Allah’s Promise of Justice

The Quran repeatedly assures believers of the eventual triumph of truth and justice. For example, Allah says in the Quran:

“Indeed, We sent forth Our messengers with clear proofs, and sent down with them the Book and justice, that mankind may uphold justice…”

“لَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلَنَا بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ وَأَنزَلْنَا مَعَهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْمِيزَانَ لِيَقُومَ النَّاسُ بِالْقِسْطِ …” (Surah Al-Hadid, 57:25)

By reciting Dua Imam e Zamana, we reaffirm our belief in this divine promise and align our hearts with the mission of Imam Mahdi (AS).

2. Strengthening Faith During Uncertain Times

Life is filled with trials, and uncertainty can often lead to feelings of hopelessness. Dua Imam e Zamana can serve as a source of comfort. It reminds believers of the awaited savior and Allah’s divine plan for humanity. This sense of purpose can help Muslims remain patient and steadfast during difficult times.

3. Fostering a Deep Sense of Unity

This supplication is a unifying practice for the global Muslim community. Regardless of geographical or cultural boundaries, reciting Dua Imam e Zamana connects Muslims to a shared hope for justice, peace, and prosperity—a time when oppression will be eradicated under Imam Mahdi’s (AS) leadership.

4. A Path to Personal Transformation

One of the most beautiful aspects of Islamic prayer is its ability to foster inner growth. The deep meanings embedded in Dua Imam e Zamana encourage introspection, self-discipline, and a commitment to righteous living. This aligns perfectly with Imam Mahdi’s (AS) key mission of inviting humanity to uphold truth and divine justice.

References to Quran and Hadith About Imam Mahdi (AS)

The arrival and mission of Imam Mahdi (AS) are rooted in the Quranic themes of justice, leadership, and the triumph of truth. Several Quranic verses emphasize these ideals:

“And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors.”

“وَنُرِيدُ أَنْ نَمُنَّ عَلَى الَّذِينَ اسْتُضْعِفُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَنَجْعَلَهُمْ أَئِمَّةً وَنَجْعَلَهُمُ الْوَارِثِينَ” (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:5)

Allah also says:

“Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them…”

“وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كَمَا اسْتَخْلَفَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ وَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ دِينَهُمُ الَّذِي ارْتَضَى لَهُمْ …” (Surah An-Nur, 24:55)

Another verse highlights the ultimate triumph of truth:

“He it is Who has sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all religions, though the polytheists may dislike it.”

“هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ” (Surah As-Saff, 61:9)

These ayaat reinforce the promise of divine leadership and the establishment of justice, which is central to the mission of Imam Mahdi (AS).

Additionally, numerous Hadiths highlight the attributes and purpose of Imam Mahdi (AS). The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“The Mahdi will be from my family, from the descendants of Fatimah.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)

Such references confirm Imam Mahdi’s (AS) pivotal role in restoring balance and justice to the world. Reciting Dua Imam e Zamana is a way of preparing for this monumental event and staying aligned with the divine mission.

How to Recite Dua Imam e Zamana

To fully benefit from this powerful supplication, approach it with sincerity, purity of heart, and a willingness to act upon its divine messages. Here are some practical tips for recitation:

  1. Perform your ablution (wudu) to ensure you are in a state of purity.
  2. Choose a quiet and distraction-free space for prayer.
  3. Begin with praise and gratitude to Allah, followed by sending blessings on Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his holy progeny.
  4. Recite Dua Imam e Zamana slowly, reflecting on the meanings behind each phrase.
  5. Conclude with a personal prayer, asking Allah for guidance and closeness to Imam Mahdi (AS).

Why Dua Imam e Zamana Matters in Today’s World

The 90-kilometer walk from Najaf to Karbala, known as the Mashi, embodies the essence of humility, sacrifice, and remembrance.

This blog aims to provide a detailed exploration of the 2025 Arbaeen pilgrimage, including the generous hospitality of Iraq, facilities for pilgrims, the spiritual significance of the walk, key landmarks along the route, important zikar, duas, and the immense rewards (ajar) for undertaking this sacred path.

Introduction and Spiritual Significance

The word “Arbaeen” translates to “forty” in Arabic, marking the completion of a 40-day mourning period following the Day of Ashura, when Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his companions were martyred in Karbala. This event remains one of the most pivotal moments in Islamic history, symbolizing the eternal struggle against oppression, tyranny, and injustice. Imam Hussain’s sacrifice serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for millions.

Arbaeen is unique not only for its scale but also for its underlying message of love, unity, and spiritual growth. According to narrations, those who visit the shrine of Imam Hussain with sincerity and devotion will receive great rewards. Specifically, Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (A.S.) has said:

“He who visits the grave of Hussain out of love for him and not for any worldly motive, Allah forgives his sins.” (Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 98, p. 28)

The Arbaeen walk amplifies the experience of connecting with the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his companions, allowing pilgrims to reflect on their values as they immerse themselves in collective remembrance.

The Hospitality of Iraq During Arbaeen

One of the most remarkable aspects of Arbaeen is the generosity and hospitality displayed by Iraq’s residents. Local families and communities see hosting pilgrims as an honor, vying to provide every possible comfort to those making this momentous spiritual trek. This hospitality is deeply rooted in Iraqi culture and is grounded in Islamic principles of compassion and altruism.

Free Services Provided by Hosts (Mawakib)

The route from Najaf to Karbala is lined with Mawakib (hospitality tents) set up by volunteers who strive to serve pilgrims. Some of the services offered include:

  • Food and Water: Around-the-clock free meals, snacks, and beverages are provided, ensuring that no pilgrim goes hungry or thirsty.
  • Rest Areas: Rest stops with mats, pillows, and blankets allow pilgrims to relax and rejuvenate.
  • Medical Assistance: Many Mawakib are staffed with doctors and nurses offering free medical care and treatment for injuries, fatigue, or pre-existing conditions.
  • Spiritual Support: Prayer spaces, religious books, and opportunities for zikar (remembrance of Allah) are readily available.

This hospitality embodies the words of the Quran:

“They give food, in spite of their love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.” (Surah Al-Insan, 76:8)

The 90km Walk (Mashi) from Najaf to Karbala

The Arbaeen walk begins in Najaf, the resting place of Imam Ali (A.S.), and ends in Karbala, the site of Imam Hussain’s (A.S.) martyrdom. The 90-kilometer route is divided into numbered poles, with each pole marking a distance of 50 meters. Pilgrims often use these poles as navigation markers.

Symbolism of the Walk

Walking symbolizes universal equality and solidarity. People of diverse nationalities, cultures, and economic backgrounds walk side by side, united by their love for Imam Hussain (A.S.). The experience also cultivates patience, humility, and perseverance—qualities that Imam Hussain himself exemplified.

Preparation Tips for Pilgrims

  1. Footwear: Comfortable and sturdy shoes to endure long distances.
  2. Clothing: Modest, weather-appropriate, and easy-to-carry outfits.
  3. Essentials: A small bag with water, snacks, prayer books, and basic medical supplies.

Key Landmarks and Stopping Points

The route from Najaf to Karbala is punctuated with spiritual and historical landmarks, each holding great significance. Key stops include:

1. The Shrine of Imam Ali (A.S.)

Pilgrims often start their walk with prayers and salutations at the shrine of Imam Ali, the father of Imam Hussain.

2. Pole 1001 (Checkpoint of Prayer)

Known as a significant prayer stop, this is where pilgrims frequently offer obligatory and voluntary prayers.

3. The Euphrates River

Walking adjacent to the Euphrates reminds pilgrims of the water deprivation faced by Imam Hussain’s camp on the Day of Ashura.

4. Imam Hussain’s Shrine in Karbala

The final destination, where pilgrims conclude their arduous yet fulfilling journey. The shrine, adorned with golden domes, is a sight of immense spiritual tranquility.

The Arbaeen walk is not just a physical exercise; it is deeply spiritual. Pilgrims are encouraged to engage in zikar (remembrance of Allah) and recite prescribed Duas.

Common Zikar and Phrases

  • “Labbaik Ya Hussain” (“Here I am at your call, O Hussain”)
  • “Ya Allah, Ya Rahman, Ya Raheem” (“O Allah, O Merciful, O Compassionate”)

Key Duas

  • Supplication for Forgiveness:

“Astaghfirullah Rabbi wa Atubu Ilayh” (“I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, and turn to Him in repentance”).

  • Ziarat Arbaeen: A dedicated text recited at Imam Hussain’s shrine on the Day of Arbaeen.

Ajar (Reward) of the Journey in Islam

Undertaking the Arbaeen pilgrimage is accompanied by immense spiritual rewards. Several hadiths underline the benefits of this act, emphasizing forgiveness, purification, and closeness to Allah. Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (A.S.) states:

“Visiting the shrine of Hussain is like visiting Allah on His Throne.” (Wasail al-Shia, Vol. 10)

The sheer act of walking increases the reward exponentially, symbolizing the pilgrim’s sacrifice and devotion.

Facilities and Provisions for Pilgrims

To ensure that the devotees can focus on their spiritual goals, the organizers and Iraqi citizens provide an array of facilities, including:

  • Transportation: Free buses for those unable to walk.
  • Security: Extensive measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
  • Communication: Stations offering free WiFi and phone charging to maintain connectivity.

Final Thoughts

The Arbaeen pilgrimage is a profound manifestation of faith, unity, and love. It teaches invaluable lessons about sacrifice, resilience, and humanity. Walking from Najaf to Karbala in 2025 not only allows pilgrims to pay tribute to Imam Hussain but also fosters a collective spirit of hope and compassion.

For those preparing for the pilgrimage, remember that this is more than a physical journey—it’s a spiritual voyage that will leave a lasting imprint on your soul.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

At Momineen Quran Center, we believe that learning the Qur’an goes hand in hand with understanding the values of sacrifice, justice, and truth—all of which culminate in the epic of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram.

The tragedy of Karbala is not merely an event in Islamic history. It is a living revolution that teaches us what it truly means to uphold faith over fear, truth over tyranny, and dignity over disgrace. Through our online Shia Quran classes led by dedicated virtual teachers, we bring the legacy of Imam Husayn (a.s.) to students around the world.

🌑 What Happened on the 10th of Muharram?

The 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, marks the day Imam Husayn ibn Ali (a.s.), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with 72 loyal companions and family members, were martyred in Karbala.

This was not a war for land or power. It was a sacred stand against corruption and oppression. It was a divine uprising to protect the true essence of Islam from the evil rule of Yazid, a tyrant who sought to corrupt the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH).

🕋 Islam Before Karbala: A Complete System

Islam was not a religion restricted to sermons and rituals. The Prophet (PBUH) laid the foundation for a comprehensive way of life, covering:

  • Social and political order

  • Moral and legal systems

  • Spiritual and intellectual development

During his 13 years in Makkah, the Prophet focused on building belief in Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah). After his migration to Medina, he established an Islamic government and addressed social justice, leadership, and community organization.

The Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly emphasized the importance of leadership after him—appointing Imam Ali (a.s.) as his successor. But history took another turn, leading to unrest and the eventual rise of Yazid, whose rule brought Islam to the brink of collapse.

⚔️ The Stand of Imam Husayn (a.s.)

When Yazid demanded allegiance from Imam Husayn (a.s.), he refused:

“A man like me cannot pledge allegiance to a man like Yazid.”

Why? Because Yazid was a known drunkard, oppressor, and violator of Islamic principles. Giving allegiance to him would mean validating tyranny.

Imam Husayn left Medina and headed toward Kufa upon receiving letters of support from the people of Iraq. But by the time he reached Karbala, the political tides had turned. His path was blocked. Water was denied to his camp. Still, on the night before Ashura, he spent his time in worship, prayer, and preparing for martyrdom.

🩸 The Day of Ashura – Sacrifice, Faith, and Bravery

On Ashura, Imam Husayn (a.s.) gathered his small group—72 against thousands—and addressed them:

“You are free to leave. These people seek only my blood.”

Yet, none abandoned him. Each companion gave their life, proving that faith was stronger than fear.

From brave warriors like Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.), Qasim ibn Hasan (a.s.), and Ali Akbar (a.s.), to aged companions and even a 13-year-old boy, each walked into the battlefield and sacrificed everything for truth.

By sunset, Imam Husayn stood alone—wounded, tired, but undefeated in spirit. His martyrdom became the turning point of Islamic history.

🌍 Karbala’s Eternal Message

The blood of Karbala nourished the roots of true Islam. It gave rise to movements like that of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, Zayd ibn Ali, and countless others who were inspired by the Imam’s defiance.

To this day, Ashura reminds us:

  • Never compromise on truth and justice

  • Stand against oppression, even if you stand alone

  • Faith is more powerful than fear

As the ninth day of Muharram dawned, Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions entered their third day without a single drop of water. The blazing sun over Karbala bore down mercilessly upon the tents of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.). In that camp, a six-month-old child, Ali al-Asghar (a.s.), cried inconsolably. His mother’s milk had dried due to starvation and dehydration, and the cries of the children echoed through the desert. Sayyida Zainab (a.s.) tried to soothe them, while young Sukaynah (a.s.) wandered in search of water, witnessing scenes no child should ever see.

One of Imam Husayn’s loyal companions, Burair al-Hamadani, was moved by the children’s agony. Along with some companions, he attempted to fetch water from the Euphrates. Though briefly successful, their noble act ended in heartbreak when the precious water was spilled in the jostling of desperate children. The sight of their efforts and the intense cruelty of those who denied water even to infants became a testament to the moral depravity of Yazid’s army.

A Preemptive Defense Against Betrayal

Intelligence reached Imam Husayn (a.s.) that Umar ibn Sa’d was planning a surprise night attack—an act considered cowardly even by the wartime standards of that era. Imam Husayn (a.s.), anticipating such treachery, ordered a trench to be dug around the camp, filled with firewood and set ablaze. It was a grim but necessary measure to protect his family and companions.

One of the enemy soldiers, mocking this scene, compared the flames to the fire of Hell. Imam Husayn (a.s.) replied with dignity and divine trust: “You threaten me with fire while I eagerly await union with my Creator.” The mocker was soon engulfed in flames—his arrogant words consumed by divine justice.

A Last Plea for Humanity

Imam Husayn (a.s.) sent his brother, Abbas (a.s.), to speak with Umar ibn Sa’d, hoping to appeal to reason. Abbas asked a profound question: “What crime has Husayn committed?” The answer he received was chilling: the order from Ibn Ziyad was clear—submit to Yazid or face death.

When Abbas (a.s.) returned to the camp, he delivered a final message to the enemy: “You are not unaware of who Husayn is. You invited him. Now you deny him water and plot to kill the grandson of your Prophet (S)? Think, for this night is your final chance. Tomorrow will be the Day of Judgment for your actions.”

Consciences Awakened

That night of reflection—the 9th of Muharram—proved to be a turning point for a few brave souls. Warriors such as Qurra bin Qeis and Al-Hurr ibn Yazid, originally part of the enemy army, were tormented by the cries of thirsty children and the nobility of Imam Husayn’s cause. They crossed the battlefield to join Husayn, choosing truth and martyrdom over shame and worldliness.

At Momineen Quran Center, we teach our students not only how to recite the Quran with clarity, but also how to reflect deeply on stories like these—where truth, patience, and faith triumph over cruelty, despite overwhelming odds.

Imam’s Final Speech to His Companions

After the night prayers, Imam Husayn (a.s.) gathered his companions. He thanked them for their loyalty but released them from their oath: “You are free to go. I do not wish anyone to face death because of me.” Then, he extinguished the lights, giving those present the chance to leave without embarrassment.

When the lights were turned back on, only 72 loyal companions remained.

Their courage was unmatched. Each one declared their willingness to give up their lives. Zuhair ibn Qain proclaimed: “If I were to be killed and brought back to life a thousand times, I would still choose to fight for you.” Even the elderly and the young were eager to protect the grandson of the Prophet (S).

Women encouraged their sons to fight, reminding them of the heroism of Hamza (a.s.), Ja’far (a.s.), and Ali (a.s.). The atmosphere in Imam Husayn’s camp was filled not with fear, but with spiritual resolve. Sounds of “Allahu Akbar” and prayers reverberated throughout the night.

Al-Hurr’s Redemption

Perhaps the most moving moment of the night came from al-Hurr. Pacing restlessly in his tent, he wrestled with guilt. By dawn, he made his decision. “I am at the crossroads between Heaven and Hell,” he said. “I choose Heaven.” Al-Hurr, along with his son, brother, and servant, approached Imam Husayn (a.s.) and asked for forgiveness.

Imam Husayn (a.s.) welcomed them with open arms, declaring, “Your Lord is pleased with you.”

At Momineen Quran Center, we remind our students that Karbala was not just a battlefield—it was a spiritual test of sincerity, sacrifice, and choice. Al-Hurr’s story is a timeless reminder that no matter how far we stray, the door to repentance remains open.

💡 Reflection for Our Students

  • Why did Imam Husayn (a.s.) offer his companions a chance to leave?

  • What makes Karbala different from all other battles in human history?

🕋 Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

As the sacred days of Muharram unfold, the 8th of Muharram reminds us of profound moments of bravery, loyalty, and final warnings. At Momineen Quran Center, where we teach the Qur’an under the light of the teachings of Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), these historical lessons are brought to life for students of all ages through our expert male and female Shia teachers.

Today, let us reflect upon four powerful events that occurred on the 8th of Muharram in Karbala, as narrated by Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi.

1. ʿAmr ibn Qarẓah – Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s Emissary of Guidance

ʿAmr ibn Qarẓah al-Anṣārī, a son of a loyal companion of the Prophet (s) and Imam Ali (a.s.), was one of the faithful who joined Imam Husayn (a.s.) in Karbala. Imam Husayn (a.s.) appointed him to speak with Umar ibn Saʿd and attempt to guide him back to truth and righteousness. His mission was one of sincere da’wah, showing Imam’s commitment to guiding even his enemies before the battle began.

2. Nāfeʿ ibn Hilāl & Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.) Break Through for Water

On the 8th of Muharram, as thirst began to take a toll on the camp of Husayn (a.s.), he instructed his brother Abul Fadl Abbas (a.s.) to attempt fetching water from the Euphrates. Accompanied by brave souls, including Nāfeʿ ibn Hilāl, the group courageously broke through enemy lines. Nāfeʿ, a seasoned warrior and devout follower of Imam Ali (a.s.), led the mission with valor.

He carried a special banner and later, on Ashura, fought bravely until he was captured with both arms broken. Refusing to surrender his loyalty, he was martyred by Shimr. His battle cries echo today in the hearts of believers:

“I am the Yemeni man from the clan of Bajal. My religion is the religion of Husayn ibn Ali.”

“I am a lion from the clan of Jamali. I follow the creed of Ali.”

3. Imam Husayn (a.s.)’s Final Warning to Umar ibn Saʿd

On this night, Imam Husayn (a.s.) met Umar ibn Saʿd in a private meeting. Despite knowing Imam’s divine status, Umar refused to abandon his position, fearing for his worldly possessions and family. Imam offered him peace, protection, and even material compensation—but his love for power outweighed truth.

Imam Husayn (a.s.), seeing Umar’s stubbornness, gave a final warning:

“Woe to you, O Ibn Saʿd! Do you not fear Allah to Whom is your return?! … Leave these people and join us. This is closer to Allah.”

And when Umar refused, Imam declared:

“May Allah slaughter you on your bed soon, and may He never forgive you on the Day of Resurrection…”

Sadly, Umar replied arrogantly:

“The barley of Iraq will suffice me in place of wheat.”

This tragic exchange reminds us of how attachment to the world can blind even the most informed hearts. At Momineen Quran Center, we teach our students the deeper Qur’anic values behind such historical dialogues—values of tawakkul, sacrifice, and akhlaq.

4. Harthamah ibn Salīm Remembers Imam Ali’s Prophecy

Another witness to the sanctity of Karbala was Harthamah ibn Salīm. Years before Ashura, he had stood on the soil of Karbala alongside Imam Ali (a.s.), who picked up its dust and said:

“O sacred land! From you, people will be resurrected who shall enter Paradise without any reckoning.”

Later, Harthamah found himself in Ibn Ziyad’s army, sent to fight Imam Husayn (a.s.). But he remembered Imam Ali’s words and confessed them to Imam Husayn (a.s.) himself. Fearing for his family’s safety, he chose not to fight nor support the Imam. Imam Husayn (a.s.) told him:

“Then go far away and do not witness our martyrdom. For whoever sees us being killed and does not come to our aid will enter the Fire.”

This profound moment captures the spiritual gravity of “choosing a side” in times of truth vs falsehood. Neutrality is not an option when Haqq is under attack.

Bismi-Llāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm

The 7th of Muharram marks a deeply sorrowful turning point in the journey of Imam Husayn (a.s.). On this day, the water supply to the camp of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and his companions was completely cut off. From that moment on, the desert of Karbala echoed with one agonizing cry:

“Al-Atash! Al-Atash!” – “Thirst! Thirst!”

Even the children of the household of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.), known for their unmatched patience, could no longer bear the suffering of thirst. This act of cruelty exposed the heartless tyranny of Yazid’s army, who denied even the basic right of water to the family of the Prophet (s.a.w.w.).

🏴 Hazrat Qasim Ibn al-Hasan (a.s.) – The Young Warrior

The 7th of Muharram is also a day when we remember the valiant youth of Karbala, Hazrat Qasim ibn al-Hasan (a.s.), the beloved son of Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Bibi Umm Farwa. Only 13 years old, Qasim (a.s.) stood bravely in the battlefield, sacrificing his life for the message of Islam and the protection of his uncle, Imam Husayn (a.s.).

While it is common in some cultures to refer to this day as “Qasim’s Mehndi”, this notion has no historical or religious foundation in authentic Islamic history.

❌ Debunking the Myth of “Mehndi in Karbala”

The idea of a “mehndi” or wedding ceremony for Hazrat Qasim (a.s.) on the 7th of Muharram is a cultural misconception that has gained popularity in regions like Pakistan and India. Mehndi, a pre-wedding celebration involving henna, is a South Asian tradition, not an Arab or Islamic practice.

Some even claim that Hazrat Qasim (a.s.) was married to Fatimah al-Kubra (a.s.), daughter of Imam Husayn (a.s.), to show that the Imam had no intention of fighting. They describe tents prepared, henna mixed with tears, and a nikah sermon by Hazrat Abbas (a.s.).

But in reality:

  • Fatimah al-Kubra (a.s.) was married to Hazrat Hasan al-Muthanna (a.s.),

  • No wedding or celebratory ritual occurred in Karbala,

  • The battlefield of Karbala was never a place for joy or marriage, but one of sacrifice, sorrow, and divine purpose.

🕯️ Karbala is a Legacy of Sacrifice, Not Celebration

Misunderstanding events like the 7th of Muharram dilutes the true message of Imam Husayn (a.s.) and the Ahlebayt (a.s.). Karbala is not about ceremonies or cultural customs—it is about standing firm against injustice, oppression, and falsehood.

At Momineen Quran Center, we are committed to helping you and your family learn authentic Islamic history and the true message of Karbala through structured online Quran classes with certified Shia teachers. The First Siege Begins in Karbala

Bismi-Llāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm

On the 6th day of Muharram, the enemies of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) intensified their cruelty. It was on this day that the siege of the Euphrates River began. Under orders from ‘Umar Ibn Sa’d, the general Shabbath Ibn Rib’i led 3,000 soldiers to block off access to the River Furat, depriving Imam Husayn (a.s.), his family, and companions of water.

This was a calculated and inhumane move to weaken the camp before battle. In the scorching heat of Karbala, the thirst became unbearable—especially for the women and children. No act better exposes the brutality of the Umayyad forces than denying water to the Prophet’s beloved grandson.

💔 The Loyal Effort of Habib Ibn Madhahir (r.a.)

On this same day, the brave and devoted companion Habib Ibn Madhahir al-Asadi (r.a.) asked Imam Husayn (a.s.) for permission to reach out to his tribe, Bani Asad, for support. Around 70 members of the tribe responded to Habib’s call and came with him to aid the Imam.

Sadly, the attempt was thwarted by ‘Umar Ibn Sa’d, who sent troops to block their path. A skirmish followed. Some of the tribe were martyred, others scattered, and Habib returned—heartbroken, but firm in his loyalty.

🤝 A Final Plea for Peace

Also on the 6th of Muharram, Imam Husayn (a.s.) met ‘Umar Ibn Sa’d for a final attempt at reconciliation. With dignity and wisdom, the Imam tried to persuade him to avoid war and bloodshed. But Ibn Sa’d, lured by worldly rewards, remained unmoved.

The Imam raised his hands and prayed:

“O Allah, never forgive him for what he is about to do.”

This heartfelt du’a was a cry for justice, a response to the hardness of hearts and the betrayal of truth.

🕯️ Remembering Al-Sharif al-Radi (r.a.)

Coincidentally, the 6th of Muharram is also the death anniversary of the esteemed Shia scholar, Al-Sharif al-Radi (r.a.), best known for compiling the Nahj al-Balaghah—a timeless collection of sermons, letters, and sayings of Imam Ali (a.s.).

A student of Shaykh al-Mufid and teacher of Shaykh al-Tusi, he opened a school in Baghdad called Dar al-‘Ilm, which shaped generations of scholars. He passed away at only 47 years of age and is buried near the Shrine of al-Kadhimayn (a.s.).

🕋 Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

As we arrive at the 5th night of Muharram, the shadow of Karbala grows heavier on our hearts. Tonight, we continue to reflect on the divine principles upheld by Imam Hussain (A.S.) and his loyal companions—particularly the unwavering values of izzah (honour), ikhlas (sincerity), and wafa (loyalty).

At Momineen Quran Center, we don’t just offer online Shia Quran classes—we help students across the globe understand the deeper message of the Quran through the lens of Ahlul Bayt (A.S.), especially during these sacred nights of Muharram.

🎙️ Majlis Focus: Loyalty and Dignity in the Face of Oppression

Tonight’s majlis reminds us of a powerful truth: every soul that stood with Imam Hussain (A.S.) in Karbala made a choice—not for political gain, not for recognition, but for truth, honour, and Allah’s pleasure.

Among these loyal supporters were individuals like Muslim ibn Awsajah, Habib ibn Mazahir, and the righteous sons of Zaynab (S.A.), who proved that dignity (izzah) in Islam is defined by submission to Allah, not surrender to tyrants.

Imam Hussain (A.S.)’s stand teaches us:

“We were not created to be humiliated, but to live with honour under Allah’s guidance.”

🧠 The Qur’anic Ideal of Izzah – Dignity Through Divine Submission

As we learned in previous nights, izzah is a central Qur’anic value mentioned over 88 times in the Holy Book. Tonight, we go deeper—understanding that true honour comes not from wealth or titles, but from siding with haqq (truth) even when it means standing alone.

This understanding is what drove every companion in Karbala to give up their lives for Imam Hussain (A.S.), because he was the manifestation of truth and Qur’anic justice.

As Imam told Hur:

“A death with dignity is better than a life of disgrace.”

🏴 5th Muharram – Increasing Pressure, Unshakable Faith

By the 5th of Muharram, enemy forces had greatly increased, surrounding the camp of the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.) and cutting off access to water. Yet no one in Imam Hussain’s camp abandoned him. Their faith, love for truth, and Qur’anic knowledge kept them grounded.

Janabe Qasim (A.S.), a young boy, prepared himself to face martyrdom with the same clarity as seasoned warriors. His iconic words echo to this day:

“To me, death in the path of Imam Hussain (A.S.) is sweeter than honey.”

This was not blind bravery—it was izzah born from the Quran, taught by mothers like Zaynab (S.A.) and nurtured in the household of Ali (A.S.).

📚 Reconnect with the Quranic Values of Karbala

At Momineen Quran Center, we strive to nurture that same clarity, loyalty, and love for the Quran in every student—young or old. Through our online Shia Quran classes, we don’t just focus on recitation, but on understanding the message of Allah through the teachings of the Ahlul Bayt (A.S.).

🕊 Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem

As we enter the 4th night of Muharram, the sorrow of Karbala deepens in our hearts. Each night draws us closer to the tragic climax of Ashura, and tonight, we reflect on the inspiring loyalty of one of Imam Hussain’s (a.s) most devoted companions — Janabe John (r.a).

He was neither from Bani Hashim nor a blood relative of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s), yet his soul was bound with unwavering love, knowledge, and sacrifice. At Momineen Quran Center, we teach not only the words of the Qur’an but the values lived by its greatest followers, like Janabe John (r.a).

While the eyes of the world are often drawn to the martyrdom of Ali Akbar (a.s), Abbas (a.s), Ali Asghar (a.s) and others from the family of the Prophet (s.a.w), the 4th night reminds us that Karbala’s battlefield was also filled with believers of diverse backgrounds who chose martyrdom over silence.

Among them stood sixteen freed slaves, many from Ethiopia, who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Imam Hussain (a.s). One of the most honored among them was Janabe John (r.a) — an elderly, African companion who had once served in the house of Imam Ali (a.s).

📖 The Life of Janabe John (r.a) – A Quranic Student in the House of Ahlul Bayt (a.s)

Originally gifted by the noble companion Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Janabe John (r.a) grew up learning the Holy Quran, Tafsir, and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) under Imam Ali (a.s) and Bibi Fatima Zahra (s.a).

He memorized the Quran and became a close companion of both Imam Hasan (a.s) and later Imam Hussain (a.s). When the Imam departed Madinah, John insisted on joining him, refusing to let age or weakness keep him away from his beloved master.

⚔️ The 4th Night: Devotion with a Sword in One Hand and Qur’an in the Other

As the pressure from Yazid’s army intensified on the 4th of Muharram, Janabe John (r.a) prepared himself for the inevitable battle. While younger companions wept and prayed, he spent the night sharpening his sword while reciting verses of the Quran. His heart was with his Imam, and his faith was unshakable.

Despite being nearly 80 years old, he stood ready — not for glory, but for loyalty.

🤲 A Conversation That Moved the Imam to Tears

On the day of Ashura, after the Zuhr prayer, John respectfully requested permission to fight. Imam Hussain (a.s) hesitated out of love, saying:
“You are elderly. Jihad is not obligatory for you.”

But Janabe John (r.a) replied with a trembling voice:
“Is it because I am a black man, a former slave, that you hesitate to accept my sacrifice?”

Imam Hussain (a.s) embraced him with tears, saying:
“Never! You are my brother in faith. Go, and may Allah be with you!”

🏹 The Martyrdom of Janabe John (r.a)

He entered the battlefield as a true servant of Allah and defender of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s). He fought valiantly, reminding Yazid’s army of their betrayal of Islam. Eventually, overwhelmed by arrows and swords, he fell.

With his last breath, he called out:
“O my Master! Let me see you once more!”

Imam Hussain (a.s) came running, placing John’s head in his lap.
John smiled through the pain:
“Master, I see the Prophet (s.a.w), Bibi Fatima (s.a), Imam Ali (a.s) and Imam Hasan (a.s) welcoming me…”

And with that, his soul departed for Paradise.

🖤 A Timeless Lesson from the 4th Night of Muharram

Janabe John (r.a) teaches us that true love for the Ahlul Bayt (a.s) knows no boundaries — not race, not status, not blood. His courage and Qur’anic knowledge made him one of the most honored martyrs in Karbala.

At Momineen Quran Center, we keep his legacy alive by offering online Shia Quran classes that go beyond memorization. We teach tafsir, history, and the values of Karbala, through certified virtual Shia Quran teachers.
